Triple-glazing is a popular way to insulate your windows and improve their energy efficiency. It sounds like a straightforward choice you could save on your energy bills every month, and it’s also a good idea for your carbon footprint to reduce your energy consumption. It’s easy to be tempted by the idea of triple-glazing for your home or business, but you need to ask yourself something about triple glazing – is it worth the extra money?

The Cost of the Work

The cost of the work is important, because it can be a significant investment. Depending on your location, this can be anywhere from around 200 dollars to 2000 dollars per pane, or even more if you have very large windows.

In extreme cases, this can lead to an increase in your energy bill as well because triple glazing takes up more space between panes than double glazing and increases temperatures within your home. This can lead to an increase in air conditioning costs.

Double glazing gets made up of two sheets of glass separated by an air gap. Triple glazing has three sheets separated by two air gaps. It also has a low-e coating on the inside pane to help keep the heat in. The extra layer of glass makes triple glazing more expensive than double glazing, but is it worth it?

Is Triple Glazing Worth the Money?

Unfortunately, the answer is not straightforward. While you might expect that triple glazing would be more efficient than double glazing because it contains more airspace, this is not necessarily true, as the added layers actually slow down the rate at which heat escapes through convection. That’s why triple-glazed windows can sometimes feel colder than those with just one or two panes.

The best thing you can do if you are thinking about purchasing new windows is to have a professional assess your home’s insulation and heating levels first.
