1. The “Soapy Water” Rule

The biggest mistake people make in 2026 is using harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads on their frames. Whether you have uPVC or powder-coated aluminum, the best cleaning solution is the simplest: warm, soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth. This removes the grit and atmospheric pollution (especially important if you live near the M6 or the coast) that can eventually “pit” the surface of the frame if left for years.

2. Clearing the “Weep Holes”

Have you ever wondered why there are small slots at the bottom of your window frame? These are “weep holes,” designed to allow any water that gets into the track to drain away safely to the outside. Over time, these can become blocked with dust, spider webs, or garden debris. Use a small brush or a vacuum attachment to clear these out twice a year. A blocked weep hole is the most common cause of “mysteriously” damp windowsills inside the house.

3. Lubricating the Moving Parts

The hinges, handles, and multi-point locking systems are the “engine” of your window. In the damp UK climate, these metal parts can start to stiffen over time. Once a year, apply a light drop of silicone-based lubricant (avoid heavy WD-40, which can attract more grit) to the friction stays and the locking bolts. 4. Checking the Seals

Finally, take a look at the black rubber “gaskets” that run around the edge of the glass. In 2026, these are made of high-grade EPDM rubber, but they can still shift slightly over time.
